SUMMARY:Reno Phil presents Tchaikovsky Discovers America
DESCRIPTION:Free Family ConcertWiggles welcome\, MEMORIES MADE \n“There’s an electric energy in this country… all these people\, so generous and open-hearted… their ideas\, their dreams\, their music… all flowing together like a mighty river – everything tumbling toward the future!” – Tchaikovsky describes what he’s discovered in America.  \nThe Reno Phil presents Tchaikovsky Discovers America by Classical Kids LIVE!  \nBased on the actual historical event\, this story tells of the great composer’s arrival in New York for the grand opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891 and his famous trip to Niagara Falls. A surprise encounter with a young American girl\, Jennie\, reveals much about Tchaikovsky – his life in Russia\, his love of music and his fears of conducting. This is a poignant story of the meeting of old world influences and new world experiences; a tale of contrast\, courage and classical music. Audiences will enjoy more than twenty-five excerpts of the composer’s music including passages from his three famous ballets – The Nutcracker\, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake -The 1812 Overture\, First Piano Concerto and String Serenade. The music is magically woven into the drama as two actors recreate historical incidents from the composer’s life and dance story passages from his famous ballets. This delightful concert\, dance and story performance is approximately 50 minutes in length and is an ideal introduction to the orchestra for young listeners.   \nPlaza Activities: Enjoy special activities for children on the plaza and in the concert hall lobbies related to the theme of the concert\, including a coloring station\, craft station\, and more. Activities take place from 3:00 PM – 3:55 PM for 4:00 PM concertgoers.

SUMMARY:Reno Phil presents Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Towering masterpieces dominate the opening concerts of the Reno Phil’s 58th season. Driven by rhythm and bold expression\, the vibrant pulse of Mariachitlán by Juan Pablo Contreras moves with confidence and purpose—direct\, energized\, and alive. Audience favorite Jon Nakamatsu returns to the stage to tackle the ultimate challenge\, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3\, one of the hardest-to-master works in the repertoire. After its premiere in New York City\, a critic wrote that “it’s great length and extreme difficulties bar it from performances by any but pianists of exceptional technical powers.” Nakamatsu brings command and intensity to this iconic work\, creating a gripping exchange between soloist and orchestra. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 stands at the fault line between Classical restraint and emerging Romantic force—bright\, propulsive\, and charged with forward motion. Beneath its radiant surface lies a restless\, assertive energy that crackles with propulsion and tension\, revealing Beethoven on the brink of redefining what a symphony could be. \nON THE PROGRAM\nJuan Pablo Contreras MariachitlánLudwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 2Sergei Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura JacksonMusic Director & Conductor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJon Nakamatsupiano\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis concert is currently available only through a Classix season subscription—subscribe now to secure the best seats at the best value. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSingle tickets and 3-concert flex packages will be available starting July 31.

SUMMARY:Reno Phil presents Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4
DESCRIPTION:This concert explores the way composers reveal character—through myth\, intimacy\, and deep hidden meanings—using the orchestra as a vehicle for personality and transformation. Mythic strength and modern voice meet as music shifts seamlessly between clarity\, emotional depth\, and expansive color. At the center is Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto\, led by returning audience favorite Ray Ushikubo\, whose refined artistry brings quiet authority and lyric intensity to one of Beethoven’s most intimate statements. Elgar’s Enigma Variations closes the evening with one of the repertoire’s most compelling portraits of human connection that is richly orchestrated\, deeply personal\, and endlessly revealing. Framed by the contemporary voice of Stacy Garrop\, this is a concert of contrast and cohesion\, where intellect\, emotion\, and storytelling converge in music that rewards close listening and leaves a lasting impression.

SUMMARY:Reno Phil presents The New World Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Sparkling wit and propulsion give way to soaring romantic expression\, as featured violinist Gabriela Lara brings urgency and warmth to the Coleridge-Taylor violin concerto of striking melodic beauty and emotional depth. The spirit of clarity and cultural synthesis carries through the evening\, culminating in the sweeping power of Antonín Dvořák’s New World Symphony. Written during his time in the US\, this piece draws on the character of American musical traditions\, charting a path for later composers. The overture\, The School for Scandal\, has endured as one of Barber’s most frequently performed orchestral works because it delivers immediate impact—brisk\, clever\, and brilliantly crafted—making it an ideal curtain-raiser that grabs the listener’s attention from the first bars.

DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSurging with electricity\, myth\, and raw orchestral power\, this concert is part one of the Reno Phil’s Gillemot Foundation Music & Space Festival. At the center is Blue Electra by Michael Daugherty\, a high-voltage violin concerto inspired by the life and mysterious disappearance of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. Written for and premiered by Anne Akiko Meyers\, the work fuses amplified violin\, driving rhythms\, and striking orchestral color\, reflecting Earhart’s daring spirit and unfinished final flight. That same elemental intensity expands outward into the vast\, immersive universe of Gustav Holst’s The Planets\, a triumph of orchestration\, where driving momentum\, massive forces\, and stark contrasts create one of the most visceral experiences in the symphonic repertoire.
